High blood pressure in pregnant women can cause preeclampsia. Contributing factors are multiple pregnancies, a first pregnancy, a history of high blood pressure previous to pregnancy, kidney disease, lupus, thrombophilias, diabetes and autoimmune deficiencies. It is most likely to occur if the woman gets pregnant before the age of 20 and after 35 years. A woman who didn’t have it in previous pregnancies while she was younger can get it if she gets pregnant at a later age. Reducing high blood pressure in pregnant women is essential to the health of both the mother and the fetus. A baby may be born underweight and the mother can suffer a stroke or fall into a coma if preeclampsia is not managed well.
