Cervical Cancer Can Be Treated by Surgery, Chemotherapy, or Radiation Therapy

November 22nd, 2009 by admin

A diagnosis of cervical cancer doesn’t have to mean an automatic death sentence.  There are successful methods of cervical cancer treatment that prolong or save the life of patients.  Three generally accepted treatments for cervical cancer are surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.  Surgery can be performed to help make a diagnosis or determine what form of treatment is needed.  If further surgery is necessary a total or radical hysterectomy may be performed.  Another option of treatment is radiation therapy.  This involves using high energy x-rays to stop the spread of cancer cells.  The radiation can be done externally or placed directly into or near the tumor internally.  Radioactive substances are implanted with the use of needles, wires, seeds, or a catheter.  Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells or stop them from dividing and spreading.  The drugs can be administered by mouth or injection.  Research is ongoing to find better methods of treatment and hopefully a cure someday.
