It is owned by AOL and run by a large army of volunteers who see the project as a hobby. Webmasters or web site owners see the DMOZ directory as a desirable place to get their web site listed. A link from DMOZ is seen as a vote of confidence in the quality of a web site and is claimed to help a sites ranking in the search engines. Because of that webmasters go to great links to try it and even get there site listed.
