Exploring as a travel writer

February 10th, 2010 by admin

I have some reservations about going on a guided tour. There’s something about having someone tell you where to go and what to see that seems a little pretentious. They say they know the best restaurants, the best places to get souvenirs or know what you can do to have a good time. I have low expectations for tours for that reason. What difference is there between reading a guide book and riding on a tour bus? The tours give at best a cursory glance of the city or place.  I’d have to say the reason people opt for a guided tour is laziness. I don’t blame people who do that during their vacation. They don’t want to stress or plan what’s supposed to be a leisurely vacation. Unfortunately, those people are missing out on a lot of authentic cultural experiences.  So many have learned how to become a travel writer by exploring some place without any rules or expectations and an open-mindedness to experience something out of their comfort zone.
